As the end of the year approaches you may be feeling that your body is crying out for a break from the stresses and pollution of everyday life. Our bodies are constantly put under stress from the foods we eat, demands at work, juggling family commitments, environmental pollution and emotional pressures, and all this can have an impact on our health. It’s not just our physical health that is affected, but also how we look and feel, which translates to other aspects of our lives.

If it’s been a hectic year and your body is feeling the strain you may be experiencing:

Lack of energy

Weight gain

Bloating

Mood swings and depression

Headaches

Poor skin

Hormonal imbalances

If this sounds familiar then your body is asking you to give it some attention. These symptoms are your body telling you that something is out of balance and needs addressing. When life is busy it’s often difficult to stop and take time to give our body the attention and nourishment it deserves and is calling for. Instead you may reach for a quick fix, such as a coffee and chocolate bar for a quick energy boost, or an aspirin to ease your headache. Unfortunately, suppressing what your body is telling you doesn’t fix the underlying problem, but causes a spiral of poor health.

At The Nutrition Coach we know that it’s not always easy to listen to your body when you have other demands in life, and that is why we are here to offer a guiding hand to a healthier future. Our New Year detox retreat is set in the beautiful Dorset countryside and is the perfect way to start 2010. We will provide you with expert nutrition advice and life coaching that is tailored specifically to you and your life circumstances, so that sustainable changes can be incorporated into your diet and lifestyle after the retreat. You will leave the weekend feeling healthy, radiant and positive for the year ahead.

The retreat is running from 21st to 24th January, and is being offered at the all inclusive price (including food, accommodation, life coaching, nutrition consultation, detox massage and body wrap) of £490 per person. Places are limited to a maximum of nine people so please do register your interest with us to avoid disappointment.

We hope to share this rejuvenating experience with you and journey deeply with pure foods, nutrition, life coaching and detox treatments. Find out more about our detox retreats or contact us to book a place.

The most important nutrient for the body is water, and its consumption is vital for our existence. An average man weighing 75kg is 45 litres water. Two thirds of this is within the cells of the body, sustaining the chemical reactions that are essential for life. Water loss of as little as 1-2% of body weight can impair mental and physical function. Losses of 7% will disrupt physiology and result in total body collapse. Dehydration of a muscle by 3% can result in a 10% loss of contractile strength and an 8% loss of speed!

Most people operate with low-grade dehydration, with a bulk of their fluid intake being ones that are dehydrating – caffeine and alcohol. These drinks cause a greater loss of water than the amount they replace. Unfortunately, by the time you feel thirsty you are already significantly dehydrated, Which makes it all the more important to develop a habit of drinking water regularly throughout the day.

So, how much water should we be drinking? Adults should drink at least 1.5 – 2 litres of uncarbonated bottled or filtered water per day, and more when exercising or when the weather is hot. Drinking enough water is also hugely important when the body is healing or when detoxing.

Last week research was published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health demonstrating that living around ‘green space’ improves your health, and the impact is particularly noticeable in reducing the rates of mental health problems.

Im sure to most of us this isn’t new news. Most, if not all, or us feel noticeably more uplifted when we’re out in nature, walking in the countryside, relaxing by the sea or enjoying fresh mountain air. However, if you live in London or another big city and are juggling a million different commitments it can be difficult to find the time to escape to the countryside for that much needed boost and advanced planning is definitely needed.

The Nutrition Coach is holding its detox retreat from 21-24 January and is set in the glorious Dorset countryside, where you’ll be surrounded by a sea of green and will truly be able to re-connect with nature. This is a perfect way to start 2010 and will leave you feeling happier, healthier and on track for the year ahead.

At The Nutrition Coach we often incorporate the use of functional tests into consultations. Functional tests are a fantastic indicator of exactly what is happening in the body, and ensure that a nutrition programme and any supplementation are designed specifically to address a client’s individual imbalances, which are evident from the test results.

Because tests are so beneficial for seeing exactly what is going on in the body, we will be making York Test Laboratories Liver Check Test and Food Intolerance Test available on site during our New Year detox retreat (21st to 24th January). The liver test looks at any damage to liver cells, whilst the intolerance test identifies any food sensitivities that may be contributing to health problems. These are a fantastic addition to our detox retreat, where the aim is to fully support the liver and overall health.

Well, the Summer holidays are well and truly behind us – and we are starting the long march into darker Winter nights! Remember be kind to yourselves – here are some of my top favourite ways just to say (to yourself) I deserve it!

1. Indulge in some luxury oil for the bath and pamper yourself with a long soak.

2. Book some time in the diary for your hair and nails and a massage! Or find a beauty college/massage college that offers more reasonable treatments for student practice

3. Buy a trashy book – or even not so trashy book – I love Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert – http://www.elizabethgilbert.com/eatpraylove.htm

4. Try the Pzziz – good for a quick break during the day and great for getting you off to sleep – http://www.pzizz.com

5. A great tip from my colleague, Hilary – buy a slow cooker. Cuisinart ones are good. Just bung in the ingredients and relax.

6. Think about doing a detox – come on our wonderful New Year retreat. Contact interested@thenutritioncoach.co.uk to find out more, or check our blog for the latest news - http://thenutritioncoach.co.uk/blog

http://www.thenutritioncoach.co.uk/nutrition-retreats.htm

7. Don’t try and have a tidy house – it’s a losing battle!

8. Live in the NOW – see “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle.

9. Breathe!

10. Celebrate the good things in life and don’t dwell on the bad

This week my local health food stores have been tempting everyone’s taste buds with samples of their delicious organic ranges. These activities are part of the Organic Fortnight campaign, which is being run by the Soil Association between September 5 and 20, to help raise awareness of the benefits of eating organic.

Organic food and farming is a topic of much debate, but for me the reasons for eating organic are certainly clear. From a health perspective, organic food contains higher nutrient levels including more vitamin C, beta-carotene, anti-oxidants, magnesium and iron, due to the natural methods used to manage the land which allows nutrient-rich soils and crops to develop. Organic food is also free of the over 300 chemical pesticides that are routinely used in non-organic farming. A non-organic apple, for example, contains on average 16 different pesticide residues. There is a lack of research on the combined effect of these chemicals, and research has linked pesticides to health problems including infertility, lowered immune function and nervous system disorders. In addition, the routine use of antibiotics in farm animals is banned under organic standards, meaning organic meat and dairy products do not contain high levels of antibiotic residues. As well as the health benefits, organic food also considers animal welfare and environmental diversity. I think these are wonderful reasons to celebrate Organic Fortnight – so why not check out your local farmers market or organic box schemes to see what they have to offer?

Excess toxicity from our food and environment overloads the organs of elimination and with it causes a variety of symptoms. Eating organic food is an easy step to reducing our exposure to toxins and is particularly important when on a detox diet.

Find out more about our detox diet programmes and contact us to make an appointment for a consultation at one of our London nutrition clinics.

Last week a report published in the Journal of Food Science indicated that extracts of both the leaves and shoots of asparagus could help protect the liver against toxicity. The study looked at the effects of alcohol and hydrogen peroxide on liver cells and found that toxicity was significantly alleviated by the asparagus extracts. Specific enzyme pathways in the liver were found to be up-regulated by the asparagus, causing faster clearance of the toxins.

This study shows that, as well as helping to alleviate hangovers, asparagus may offer protection to liver cells against toxic insult. The liver is the key organ for detoxification and any detox programme therefore focuses on ensuring that the liver is working as efficiently as possible. If you’re looking to clean-up your diet and detox your body then this study is a wonderful excuse to add asparagus to your shopping list and eat it until your liver’s content.
