We have just been asked to present to a major hotel chain – who want to be able to offer their clients a really beneficial menu choice to optimise the health of their customers – a really stunning idea and very forward thinking which will pay dividends!

As part of the Nutrition Coach we regularly attend corporate health awareness days and Friday the 19th February was a very successful evening indeed.

Burdy organised Friday’s beauty event with her usual passion and boundless energy. I am always impressed with the passion and drive with which Burdy and her colleagues pull out all the stops for the employees. Everyone I met spoke very highly of the company; most have been working there for no less than five years and some for 30 – unheard of these days. They truly have the employee’s best interest at heart when it comes to promoting health awareness and Inmarsat employees are always keen to learn more. I have had many success stories with some losing weight, others reducing blood pressure and cholesterol and increased energy levels as well as better productivity which is definitely a win-win situation all round.

Why don’t you get The Nutrition Coach to inspire your staff with health tips which can change their lives today?

The New Year has kicked off brilliantly for the Nutrition Coach’s corporate arm. We have been instructed by an organisation to design a number of health initiatives for their staff – hosted in various locations. It is these far sighted companies that can see how much just a little nutritional knowledge can do for not only the organisation but how much the staff benefit as well.

Typically, we host interactive talks or workshops with action points for the staff that are easy to implement but make a huge difference to energy and health.

It is interesting that some companies, after all the difficulties of last year, want to make sure they are still allowing budget for these all important benefits for staff – but the benefit really goes two ways – it is great for the staff and good for the company

Have a look at Corporate Nutrition

Doing in-house presentations for companies is one of the highlights of my job. I have presented at 3 top banks this month – and we generally have a really fun but it is also really practical too.

Often the format is a presentation of about 45 minutes – I never talk with power-point – as power-point is used enough as a business tool and I really want to engage the audience I speak to. I am passionate about my subject but I aim to be highly practical too. Nutrition and lifestyle changes have to be do-able in everyday life – the theory cant out weigh making real change. Nutrition also needs a good dose of humour pumped into it, in my opinion, or it could be quite a worthy and dry subject – so, I aim to pitch it that way and we have a lot of fun too.

I did a conference the other day – where we did a test called a zinc taste test – where we were testing to see if the delegates were short of this important mineral (important for immunity and the stress reaction) It is a real talking point!

I rang a bank that I went to talk at a month ago – and what was stunning is that all the group had made some small changes to their diet and they were all feeling more energised, and vibrant as a result.

Last week The Nutrition Coach had the pleasure of delivering a corporate nutrition day at a top bank in the city, as part of a corporate wellness day. During the day a surprising number of people asked me about the link between detoxing and skin health, and in particular how detoxing helps to clear psoriasis.

Psoriasis is one of the most common skin complaints and whilst it can flare up for reasons such as stress, as with many skin problems, there is a significant link between gut health and toxin overload. Poor digestion can result in proteins being insufficiently broken down, which creates excessive toxicity in the gut. Any build-up of toxins also has a knock-on effect of burdening the liver, which usually filters out the toxins from the gut before they circulate round the body, but if it is overloaded it becomes less efficient at this.

A diet to help psoriasis therefore needs to support good digestive and liver health. This is why detox principles are perfect, as negative foods such as alcohol, sugar, common irritants (such as wheat and dairy) are avoided and pure whole-foods are emphasised.

Find out more about how a detox plan can help psoriasis and contact us to make an appointment for a consultation at one of our London nutrition clinics.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the day at a top bank in the city delivering a corporate wellness day (Corporate Nutrition day) for a group of 9 ladies from their special events team.

In our preliminary talks the lady who was organising the day made it clear that she thought that her team were well aware of health/healthy eating as they all were keeping fit at the gym and some were watching their weight. She said that she really wanted a new approach that wasn’t just going to show them what they already knew. But the team suffer from low energy and tiredness.

“Hmm” I said. “Tell me about what you had for breakfast”

Skipped breakfast

“Ok” says I “What about yesterday?”

Recovering from a heavy night, muffin, latte

“Hmm” I say “Think I can teach you something”

We started the day with a presentation that I had prepared especially for them on Vibrant Energy – We then looked at the ladies’ food diaries and gave them some really practical steps for them to achieve in the next four weeks – really easy things that will help to restore energy.

We did a little bit of fun stuff, a zinc taste test – which checks for mineral deficiencies – only one of the group wasn’t deficient. You can get low in zinc if you are in a demanding job and burning the candle at both ends! Zinc helps in many reactions in the body and is important for immunity.

We did a session on how they might be able to improve the food menus that are offered at events/brainstorming/ strategy sessions at the bank – to keep the delegates alert and motivated

Finally we wandered over to Borough Market to wander amongst the stalls – I had prepared a piece on seasonal foods - once you know what is in season – you know how to shop locally and to get really good nutritious food for both home and the work place.

With really small steps – it is amazing what energy great nutrition can give the work arena – what is often surprising is that we think we know what to do – I find that more than often, what is offered at work as “healthy” choices is the very thing that is causing the tiredness!

Despite challenging times, corporate nutrition is on the up. We often get approached by companies eager to review their canteen offerings from a nutritional point of view. It is more and more accepted that what your staff eats can have a noticeable impact on their wellbeing as well as productivity.

We have found that despite the current economic environment companies are keen to review their strategy in the canteen. For very little money, a huge difference in energy, morale and productivity can be achieved by making small but significant changes to the menu offering.

We recently did a nutritional audit for a corporate canteen of a large bank in London. It’s great to see that companies are wanting to make the investment in their staff – especially now when employees are being stretched by many budget restraints.

The first thing we were asked to do was to review the breakfast choices in the canteen. We were really excited to undertake this because breakfast has a huge impact on the energy levels of the individual for the rest of the day. When we see clients in my one to one clinic, most tell us they have their breakfast at work. So it was such a great opportunity to create some real impact, and the company can now offer a five star nutritionally approved breakfast for their staff!

If you think your canteen could do with a nutritional audit, do contact our corporate nutrition consultancy team in London – we’d love to have a chat.

The Food Standard’s Agency (FSA) has recently been making noises about making the food labeling scheme it is running on a voluntary basis compulsory. This seems to be the back up plan, should the voluntary labeling not be taken up by enough retailers and caterers.

The whole idea of labeling may feel a bit daunting from a retailers or restaurateur’s point of view – your most popular and delicious dish may actually show a bright red light when it comes to saturated fat and salt content. Through our food consultancy services in London, we have been liaising with restaurants and caterers for a while now, helping them better understand the nutritional value of their dishes. We can then flag the dishes that may come under scrutiny as far as the FSA standards are concerned, and act as restaurant menu development consultants to help improve the balance of healthy dishes on the menu.

Even without altering your menu, there is value in understanding more about the nutritional facts of your dishes. We have often worked with clients who want help from someone who can help develop nutrition facts on menus. In practice, this means analysing the nutritional contents of the dishes, and highlighting any positive nutritional messages. For example, for one client we helped identify that their cooking processes involved using high quality olive and walnut oils, which contain beneficial fatty acids, instead of using much butter or other saturated fats. This was a positive health message that we could then help communicate to their client base.

I can’t really think of any restaurant that couldn’t benefit from understanding the nutritional contents of their menus better, particularly if the FSA is thinking of making the labeling compulsory. Now is the time to look at what your selling points are, where you might want to tweak things a bit – all before it’s right there in front of the consumer.

Our experience through the one-to-one clinical consultations is that consumers are becoming more aware of what they are eating, and prefer to have healthy choices available (even though they don’t always want to go for them!). We find the combination of running the food consultancy service and the individual clinic consultations gives us a unique ability to advice retailers on what consumers want and how best to communicate this.
